What is Lensed Optical Fiber


Lensed optical fiber, also known as fiber lens or fiber micro-lens, is a type of product manufactured by processing the end face of an optical fiber to have lens functions. The main functions of lensed optical fiber include changing the mode field size and shape of the optical fiber to improve system coupling efficiency, altering the light transmission path, reducing refraction and reflection, changing the tip shape to adapt to imaging, sensing, etc., in different environments. It has a wide range of applications in many fields.


Types of Lensed Optical Fiber

Angled Polished Fiber


  • Application fields: Fiber lasers, fiber networks, traditional optics, fiber sensing, etc.

  • Characteristics: The front end of the optical fiber is ground to a slant at a certain angle as required; the optical fiber metallized according to customer requirements.


Conical Lensed Optical Fiber


  • Application fields: Coupling for LD, DFB, SLD lasers, VCSEL outputting circular or near-circular beam cross-section; medical laser microsurgery and micro-illumination

  • Characteristics: The front end of the optical fiber is ground to a conical surface at a certain angle as required, and a spherical surface with a certain curvature radius is ground at the front end of the conical surface as needed; the optical fiber metallized according to customer requirements.


Wedge Lensed Optical Fiber


  • Application fields: Coupling for LD lasers outputting elliptical beam cross-section.

  • Characteristics: The front end of the optical fiber is ground to a double slant surface with a certain included angle as required, and the front end of the double slant surface is made into a cylindrical surface with a certain curvature radius as required; the optical fiber's emitted light beam is shaped into an ellipse, or the fiber's received light spot is changed from circular to elliptical; the optical fiber metallized according to customer requirements.


Spherical Lensed Optical Fiber


  • Application fields: Medical endoscopes, semiconductor laser coupling, ultra-miniature device packaging, optoelectronic conversion devices, optical sensing, optical test platforms, CMM probes (widely used in medicine, military, police, intelligence, integrated optics, optical communication, optical computing).

  • Characteristics: Small size, short optical path, lightweight, easy for mass production and packaging; simple coupling process, good repeatability, high coupling efficiency.
